I Flinched

I flinched.
Because what appeared before me came out of nowhere. I was distant. Distracted. Focused on something else entirely. So instinctively, I prepared for the worst. For the crash and the sting of the oncoming unknown. But it’s always been brief. Just a twitch of a nerve of a nervous twit. Shocking enough to jumpstart a heart, and also make it miss a few beats. Because it’s not the surprise that that lingers. No. It’s the moments after, when we are snapped back into reality. When we are reminded where we are, who we are, and the situation we find ourselves in.
I flinched. To remember the bigger picture.
I flinched. To get my life back on track. I
flinched. Because I forgot who I was meant to become.
