The Puddle

And when you met me, I was face down in the dirt.

But you didn’t leave.
You didn’t avoid me, afraid of the damage I could cause.
You didn’t try and cover me up, just so you can walk all over me anyway.
You didn’t see me as an obstacle standing in the way of what you truly wanted or where you needed to go.

No. When you met me, I was face down in the dirt.

And you stared
Longingly,
Wondering just how deep I was.

You didn’t care that I was a puddle,
Just a shallow pool that could never give you the treasures of an ocean.

And so, you jumped.
Throwing caution to the wind that carried your umbrella away.

And so, you jumped.
Straight into me
Into every ounce of who I was
Making ripples feel like waves
And clearing a path for the lowest part of me
That hasn’t seen light in so long
Breathe again,
Even for a moment.

And so, you jumped.
And my god….
What a splash it made.
