I Was Once Afraid of the Dark

I was once afraid of the dark

Of the unknown that lurked in the shadows
Of every silhouetted jacket in the closet that might decide to move when the coast is clear
Of every creak and every moan of every floorboard in the other room

I was once afraid of the dark

Until the night you stayed over

And I felt safe knowing you were there, even when I couldn’t see you
For your silhouette, though still, was a sanctuary in the night
And your slight snores echoed in my head and in my heart
Drowning out the world
Lulling me to sleep

I was once afraid of the dark

But now I fear the light

Because the sun will rise
And I’ll open my eyes
To an empty space beside me
