Poseidon Came Up to Catch his Breath

And when he did
He brought the water with him

Oceans dried
And lakes were bare
Rivers shot
Into thin air

Yet somehow still
I drowned

In the blues of your eyes
In the attention you gave
In the tears I wept
Knowing full well
I’ll never dip my toe
Into a future where we
Are free to swim together

Poseidon came up to catch his breath

That must be why
I’m gasping like a fish
On dried land

For water wasn’t the only thing
I lost that day
